Papers, primarily 1770-1848, accumulated by members of the Baylor family of New Market, Caroline County, Va., especially Frances Walker Baylor (d. 1783), her son, John Baylor, Jr. (1750- 1808), who studied in England ca. 1770-1772, her grandson, Dr. George D. Baylor (1789-1848), and her great grandson, Dr. Warner Lewis Baylor (1825-1894). The loose papers are mainly family letters, legal records, genealogical information, and poems. Manuscript books include a nineteenth-century cookbook, Dr. George D. Baylor's ledger of medical accounts, 1842-1847, and genealogical information on the Lewis and related families. Three printed books have been transferred to the library. The collection is complemented by various photostats, including Col. John Baylor's letterbook, 1749- 1765, with letters to John Backhouse, Samuel Waterman, John Norton, Edward Athawes, Cary and Company, and others. Names in the collection include: James Clay, Robert Farrish, John Fox, George Hoomes, John L. Pendleton, Robert Powell, Edmund Taylor, and F. Waring.

An order of the Caroline County Court (Virginia) directing John Baylor to pay William Taliaferro for work done at Roy's warehouse at Port Royal.
Caroline County Court proclamation of outlawry against enslaved man Jack, 1743 August 13

Proclamation of outlawry by the Caroline County, Virginia Court against Jack, an enslaved man, belonging to Robert Powell. The proclamation authorizes the sheriff to raise men to apprehend Jack. It further absolves all persons from punishment for killing Jack. The proclamation is signed by Robert Farish and George Hoomes, justices of the peace for Caroline County, and is dated August 13, 1743.

Essex County coroner's inquest report upon the body of a deceased African American male, 1743 November 8

Report (November 8, 1743) of Essex County, Virginia coroner, F. Waring, on the death of an African American male found along the Piscataway River. Waring noted the man was of medium size and marked on the breast and face and had with him a gun, sword and abundant clothing. Waring determined the cause of death to be exposure to the elements.
Edmund Taylor letter to Colonel John Baylor, 1756 March 15

Edmund Taylor letter to John Baylor. Taylor writes that he as sent three small loaves of sugar to Baylor and duroy for his son, John. He also notes that he has various sizes of nails available. Taylor wishes Baylor well in the horse races and reminds him of the petition concerning the Loan office.
Frances Baylor letter to John Baylor, 1770 March 25

Letter of Frances Lucy Walker Baylor, Newmarket plantation, Caroline County, Virginia, to her son, John Baylor in London, England. Mrs. Baylor writes approvingly of John's desire to attend Cambridge University. She writes of her desire to see him and apologizes that the foodstuffs she sent didn't reach him and will try sending them again. The letter was sent to John at Mr. John Norton's. Norton was a London merchant and uncle to John by way of his marriage to Mrs. Walker's sister, Courtenay.

James Clay, Wlliamsburg, Virginia, letter to John Baylor, Caroline County, Virginia. Clay writes to acknowledge the return of Mr. and Mrs. Baylor to Virginia and inform them that he has heard their relatives in London are all well.

Petition of Ann Fox, Thomas B. Fox, William Fox and Henry Fox to Justice George Wythe of the High Court of Chancery, 1780

Petition of Ann Fox and her sons, Henry, Thomas B. and William, to George Wythe of Virginia's High Court of Chancery. The petitioners allege John Fox, eldest son of Ann and her husband John, sold his father's lands which were designated in the father's will to be distributed by Ann to all four sons. The petitioners seek restitution from the younger John's estate.
