    Envelope addressed to Mrs. Dr. Thomas H. Sherwood from her husband during his administration of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum in Williamsburg, Virginia. The envelope is addressed from the Asylum and bears the name of "Dr. Jno. M. Galt" which has been crossed out with a pen. Dr. John Minson Galt was the longtime administrator of the Asylum whose recent death led to Sherwood's appointment there by the Union Army. An 1862 George Washington 3 cent stamp is affixed to the upper right corner of the envelope. It has been cancelled by an ink stamp from Old Point Comfort dated sometime in 1862.

    Dr. Thomas H. Sherwood letter to his wife sent care of Professor Mitchell in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The undated letter was sent by Sherwood during his administration of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum (now Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, Virginia) in 1862. Sherwood encourages his wife to look after her health, discusses family and friends and his situation at the Asylum.
