Description

Benjamin Cocke, Swans Point, letter to Hartwell Marable. Cocke had planned to wait on his mistress but was seized with a sickness that nearly carried him “into eternity.” He has recovered, though, and hopes fortune will allow him to see the lady he loves. Yet he‘s still too sick to see her. He‘s sorry Marable didn‘t visit at James River. He hasn‘t seen him in many years. Asks Marable if he sees Jos. Smith to tell him he won‘t back out of the agreement for Smith to build a fence for his plantation. Respects to Mrs. Marable. P.S. “It is now dull times, no news from England, the Cr. of our Country is very lowe with them; and the sight of a ship up the River has not been seen lately.” Also note on tobacco.
