To dye Madder

Wash your hanks clean, and put them in Alum water th[torn, illegible]
over night, wring them in the morning and let them drain,
whilst you make a tolerable stiff sizing of wheat bran, let it
boil and strain it through a thin cloth. Dissolve your
madder in some of it and pour it back. Let it boil two or
three minutes, then throw in your hanks; Let them boil 10 or
15 minutes stirring constantly. Hang them out without wringing
and let them dry. Then dip them in some clear weak lye
and let them dry. wash them and they will be a beautiful
red.
