Caroline County Court proclamation of outlawry against enslaved man Jack, 1743 August 13

Proclamation of outlawry by the Caroline County, Virginia Court against Jack, an enslaved man, belonging to Robert Powell. The proclamation authorizes the sheriff to raise men to apprehend Jack. It further absolves all persons from punishment for killing Jack. The proclamation is signed by Robert Farish and George Hoomes, justices of the peace for Caroline County, and is dated August 13, 1743.

Whereas we have bin Credibly Inform'd that one Negro -
Man Slave named Jack belonging to Rob^rt. Powell of
y^e s^d. County planter, is Runaway now Lying hid [and]
Lurking and doing Mischef within this County -
Therfor in his Majestys name we hereby Require y^e s^d
Slave fourthwith to surrender himself or to return
home to his master; and we [torn, illegible] [r]equire the Sheriff of y^e County
Afores^d. to make Deligent Serch and to apprehend y^e s^d. Slave -
and him to Deliver to his master or to Commit to y^e Goal
of this County there to remain untill he shall be Clam'd by
his owner or otherwise Discharged as y^e Law Directs & y^e s^d. -
Sheriff is hereby Impowerd to raise and take w^th. him, Such power
of his County as he Shall think fit & Necessary for y^e Effectual
Apprehending y^e s^d. outlyin Slave; and we further Declare; if
y^e s^d Slave Shall not Surrender himself nor return home. Imea
diatly after Due publication of these presents y^t. then any person
whatsover may Lawfully Kill & Destroy him without being
Lyable to any penalty for so doing & hereof all persons are requir'd
to take due notis, Given under our hands and seals this 13^th. day
