Warner L. Baylor, Esq.
Petersburg, Va.

Dear Sir,

Your letter dated
14th. and mailed 16th, of this month re=
ceived. I thank you for the notes
continued in your letter.

Col. William Aylett of King Wm. who
married in 1766 Mary daughter of
Col. James Macon and his wife Elizabeth
Moore - was my great-grandfather.

I have in my possession the portrait
of Mrs. Elizabeth Macon nee Moore
daughter of Augustine Moore by his
2dn. wife Elizabeth Todd, widow
of Henry seeton, Esq.

Miss Elizabeth Moore, Moor, or More
as I have seen the name spelt, mar:
ried 1st. a Mr. Lynn Lloyd who was
alive in 1737. He dying she married

[Page 2]

James Macon. Mr. Lloyd must have
died shortly after 1737; for Augustine
Moore in his will dated Januay 20th
1742 mentions his grand-daughter Elizabeth
Macon. Col. Macon died between
July 22nd and December 15th 1768,
as shown by old papers found among the
papers of his son-in-law Col. Wm Aylett.
I have the will of Mrs "Elizabeth Macon
of the Parish of Saint John in the county
of King William, widow." This will of
my great-great-grand mother is dated
September 10th, 1779. Her daughter Mrs.
Mary Aylett, her grandson Philip Aylett,
her granddaughter Elizabeth Aylett and
her son-in-law Col Wm Aylett are men=
tioned. Her other son-in-law Bar:
tholomew, - the brother of Mrs. Genl Wash=
ington - is mentioned. Also her grand-
daughter - Anne Claiborne, daughter of
Bartholowmew Dandridge - and wife of
Wm Dandridge Claiborne, is mentioned.

In regard to the name of Augustine
in the Moore family, I do not think

[Page 3]

that it comes from Col Augustine
[illegible], as I remember to have seen
suggested in the Standard by some
writer some two or three years since.
The father of Col Augustine Moore of
Chelsea King Wm. Co was Basil Moore,
the son of Thomas Moore and his wife
dauther of Sir Basil Brooke.

This I learned in 1858 while searching
over papers of my great-grand-father,
Col Wm. Aylett.

A few years ago, I found this ac:
count of the descendants of Sir Thomas
Moore. - Sir Thomas More1 left three
daughters and one son John2 More,
who married Miss Anne Cresacre

Children of John More

ter of the Protestant Church, and left
three sons Cyprian, Thomas and Constantine

Basil Brooke.

Basil6 more - lived till 1702 and had numerous progreny.

I think that Augustine Moore of
Chelsea King William was one
of the sons of this Basil More of Chelsea
England : for it is not likely that there
were two Basil Mores sons of two
Thomas Mores who married daughters
of a Sir Basil Brooke.

A grandson of Sir Thomas More was
named Augustine - as shown above.
There was a tradition among the elder
Moores of Chelsea that Augustine
Moore was a descendant of Sir Thomas.
I think that the presumption is very strong
that the tradition is correct

Find out if you can who was the father of
Col. James Macon. Let me know about the Ber=
nards and Todds.

Truly your friend,
Wm Winston Fontaine.
