GONVILLE AND CAIUS COLLEGE
CAMBRIDGE.

11th August 1938.

Dear Sir,

The University Registrary has handed to me
your letter of July 28.
I enclose on a separate sheet
an extract from the Biographical History of this College
which gives all the details of your great-grandfather's
career here which are now available. As regards the
private school, and it is not clear whether the School-
master's name was Mountain or Fountain. The information
in the extract which is enclosed in brakets does not
come from our records and probably was obtained from the
book to which a reference is given.

You will observe that the facts tally with the
information you give with one exception. Neither in the
University Offices nor in our own records is there any
sign that John Baylor graduated, and the fact that his
Scholarship came to an end in March 1772 would seem to
show that he did not remain in residence for the usual
period. It was, of course, quite common in the 18th
