Baylor

John 1st. Of the name, and of whom we know but
little, came to this country from the town of
Tiverton, County Devonshire England, in the year
- settling in lower Virginia, as most of the
settlers of that day did; the date of his birth,
death, and place of burial, are unknown ; nor
is it known who was his mother before mar=
=riage, or the maiden name of his wife.

John 2nd, son of the above; was born at Tiverton, the
place of nativity of the elder John, England 1650, and died
in Norfolk Va 17th September 1721 - Married in 1698, the
widow OBrien, of New Kent County. Her maiden name was
Lucy Todd, and was supposed to have been raised in the
neighbourhod of Tood's Warehoushe, now Dunkirk in
King and Queen County, Virginia, on the Mattaponi,
which at tht time, was a shipping point of the planters
who lived at or neary by. These two, 1st and 2nd. John's Father
and Son, took up large grants of Va land, either as
first or second holders of Patents; and established trading
houses in several of the counties, at all of which, they
amassed a large fortune. They lived at or near Mantua
in King and Queen : Another report says at Mantetuke.
Mantua was in the angle formed by the junction of
Gannetts Creek with the Mattaponi and old members
of the family, Uncle John Baylor, my Uncle "said
it was thought large sums of money had been buried
near by, on Smokers Island, which sums, were part of
what was made by our Great Grand Fathers, from trading.
Issue of John and Lucy Baylor 2nd John two children of
whom we can get any information : John 3d. and Lucy
Elizabeth. Elizabeth daughter of Joh 2nd. and Lucy Todd
Baylor, was born 1718, died single. It is said she was engaged to
Mr Tunstall and died the day of her intended marriage.

John 3d. son of John Baylor and Lucy Todd. Born May 12th 1705
dide April 3d. 1772 at New Market, Caroline County, to which
place he moved in 176. He is buried at New Market
under the old oaks. He was married at Yorktown 2nd of
January 1744 to Frances Walker, daughter of John Walker
and Courtenay Tucker. Issue : 12 children

1st John died an infant August 14th 1744.

Fanny and Elizabeth born October 20th 1745 died infants.

Lucy born Oct 12th. 1746 died in Alexandria July 9th 1783.

John 4th Born Sept 4th. 1750 Died Feby 5th. 1808 at Bowling Green
Caroline County Va.

George Col in Revolution : born in January 17th. 1752 died
March 9th. 1784 at Bridgetown, Barbadoes island, from the
effects of a bayonet wound received at Tappan New Jersey.

Robert born January 19th. 1754, died 1826, in Mississippi
on Pearl River.

Fanny born July 27th. 1756, died, Octr. 10th. 1815 at New Market
- buried there. Married Mr Nicholson - No issue.

Courtenay born July 13th 1758, died 1795 in Gloucester County
Va. She married Jasper Clayton, father of Arthur and Grandfather of Cousin Jasper.

Bernard, born July 23d. 1759, died an infant.

Walker born Oct 13th. 1762, died 1826 in Kentucky. Had
descendants in Texas at this time, 1885.

Elizabeth born Dec 5th. 1766, died Dec 5th. 1831 in Richmond
Va. at MrShepperd's, Public Printer, next the American
Hotel, buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery, no tomb, died sing

Francis Walker born - died at New Market.
Caroline County Va July 9th. 1783 buried beside
her husband, "This was my Father's Grand Mother
"Mrs John Baylor."

Frances Walker Norton married March 17th. 1764 to John
Armistead of Ocquocon Prince William Co. Va - Issue -
John Baylor, William, George, Addison, Bowles, Walker, Keith,
Louis Gustavis, six Sons, and three dauthers: Fanny Mary, and Eleanor.

John married Miss Canter; left issue.

William married Ann Norton, niece of Mrs Frances Baylor
of New Market.

George married Miss Hughes of Baltimore, left issue. He
was born at New Market, Caroline Co Va, at his Grandfathers
and then owned by his Uncle John Baylor. Said place
is now owned by Dr John Roy Baylor. George Armistead
was a Colonel in the army, and had commanded at Fort
M<sup.cHenry when bombarded by the English in 1814.
He left issue, still living in Baltimore, New York, and
Philadelphia.

Addison Bowles married Miss Peyton of Winchester Va.

Walker Keith, married Miss Stanley, and attained the
rank of Brigadier Genl. in the regular army, left issue
a daughter who married MrCarr of fauquier Co. Va.

Louis Gustavus a Captain in US army, killed at Lundy's Lane.

Fanny married Dr Gillis. Had a daughter who married
Dr Mutter of Philadelphia. Fanny Gillis was born in
Fredericksburg Virginia.

Mary, married Landon Carter of Sabine Hall Richmond Co Va.

Eleanor Bowles married Colonel Daingerfield of Essex
County Va. Left issue. Henry now living, at Tappahn=
=nock Va.

Brigadier Genl. Louis, the son of Genl Walker Keith
Armistead and Miss Stanley, commanded a
Brigade in Genl. Pickitts Division
of the

Confederate Army, at the battle of Gettysburg,
was one of the first to mount the breastworks
where he received his death wound in that
memorable charge on the Federal works.

John Baylor son of John Baylor, and Frances Walker
was married November 18th. 1778 in London at Crutched
Friars, Parish church of St Olave, by Revd. John Pett
to Frances Norton of Yorktown Va. She was daugh=
=ter of John Norton of London, and Courtenay Walker of
Yorktown Va. and her Mother was sister of Mrs. Baylor
consequently, she was first cousin to her husband.
They returned to Va after or during the revolution, and
resided at New Market, where they are buried.

Issue of John Baylor and Frances Norton:
John born May 18th. 1786 died - at New Market
Married Miss Maria Roy Left issue: one son Dr John Roy
Baylor

George Daniel Baylor 2nd. son, and graduate of Medical
School in Philadelphia : born January 29th, 1789, died
April 18th 1848 at Lockeley's in Caroline Co ; buried at
New Market. Married Miss Elizabeth Lewis
Fox of Gloucester County Va. She was daughter
of John Fox, and Eleanor Lewis of Gloucester
Co Va. She died April 3d. 1839, at White Cottage
near New Market, and is buried at latter place

Issue of Dr George D Baylor and Elizabeth Lewis Fox.

John Norton - living unmarried 1885

Ellen Augusta - dead 1857. married

Mercer Garrett - two infants dead. She is buried
in Petersburg.

George Robert died unmarried - buried in
Petersburg, Born May 24th, 1820 Died April 1878

Frances Courtenay married Mr Charles Pollard
of Norfolk Va. Issue - two childrren : Catharine
Roy; now Mrs George Olivier, living at the
University of Va.

Benjamin Loyall - dead, buried at Petersburg
Va.

Wanner Lewis Baylor M D; married twice.
1st to Miss Mary Chapell of Petersburg.
No children living. 2ne. Miss Lizzie Hoskins
Wright of Tappahanock, Essex Co Va. 1880 two
children 1885.

Julia Anne Baylor, married Mr Joseph
Wiles Kay of Caroline County Va. Issue -
Georgia Baylor, married Stephen M Watts
of Amherst County Va. in April 1[torn, illegible]4.

Thomas Wiles Kay MD, graduate of
"College of Physicianas and Surgeons", Baltimore
Md. is now connected with "Syrian Protes=
=tant College Beyroot, Syria. Professor of
Materia Medica. Zoologa, and Botany.

Louisa Henrietta Baylor, seventh child of
Dr George D and Eliza Lewis Baylor
is living - unmarried.

Thomas Wiltshire Baylor, eighth child, born
March 28th 1833 - died July 1864, at Chimborazo
Hospital, of wounds received at Cold Harbor.
Thomas had Wiltshire put in his name, after the British
Consul at Moggadore, Morocco, Africa. Mr. Wiltshire
was very kind in ransoming Capt. Riley, and crew
of the American Brig, Commerce, which was wreck=
on the coast, and the Captn. and crew sold into
slavery, by the Arabs. Thomas was a member of
Co H 30th Va Regiment, Captn John M [illegible]

Corses Brigade. "Virite Sans peur", can aptly be written
of Brother Thomas. He is buried at Hollywood
Cemetery, Richmond Va. and his grave is marked
by a tomb.

Alexander Galt Baylor born October 8th 1835 is
unmarried. He is the 9th and last child of Dr George
Daniel Baylor, and Eliza Lewis Fox.

George Baylor, Col of Cavalry: was aid to Gen Washington
at the Battle of Trenton, NJ; and carried the captured
flags to Congress, then sitting in Philadelphia.
These flags were taken from the Hessians. At Tappan
in New Jersey, his regiment was surprised - for an
an account of which, see "Burks Histo of Virginia"
He married Miss Lucy Page, daughter of Mann
Page of Mansfield, on Rappk river, below Frederics
burg Va. - Issue: one Son : John Walker Baylor, who
marriec Nancy Fitz Hugh. Issue - three daughters.
Fanny, died unmarried - Others : Mrs Brent, and Mrs
Conner of Alexandria - Col George Baylors, widow,
married Nat Burwell of Millwood Frederick Co
Va.

Robert son of John Baylor and Frances Walker, married
Lucy Gwynn of Gwyn's Island Va. Issue: Fanny
Courtenay, Gwynn, Wythe, Tucker, George -
Fanny married John Washington
Courtenay married Mr New of Va.
Gwynn married Miss Weems
Wythe married Miss Lucy Barbour of Orange Co Va
Tucker married Miss Barbara New of Kentucky

of Gloucester Co Va. Issue: Courtenay, Arthur, Baylor,
Caroline. Arthur married his first Cousin Jane
Baylor. Issue: Jasper, Fannie, George, John. All dead but Jasper.

Walker Baylor, son of John Baylor and Frances
Walker, married Miss Bledsoe of Virginia, and
moved to Kentucky, where he died, and his
descendants moved to Texas, where they now
live. Judge R E B Baylor, was his son, and found
=ed Baylor College. Walker Baylor, was Captn of
Cavalry in the Revolution, and tis said, his company
uniformed by a French lady of rank.

Daughters of John Baylor and his cousin Frances
Norton of London -Viz.

1st Courtenay Orange: married Mr Thomas Fox of Gloucester
(he was my mothers uncle)Issue John, Thomas, and
William, ONe Daughter, Frances Ann, who married
my mother's half brother, Wanner Lewis Olivier.
John, Thomas, William, died without iss[ue] [torn, illegible]
had four daughters, Fannie, Ann, Louisa, Elizabeth,
and three sons: Wanner, George and Fielding -1885

2dn Daughter Susannah, married Mr John Sutton of
Alexandria Va. Issue: one son John, who died when half grown.

3d Daughter Lucy, married Mr Horace Upshaw of
Essex Co Va. Issue: three daughters: Henrietta, Delia, and
Lucy. First two died without issue. Lucy married
Mr Sennent of Bowling Green, and moved to Alabama,
has children.

4th Daughter, Louisa Henrietta, married Mr William
Upshaw of Essex Co Va. Issue: that lived, William,
George, Courtenay, and Louisa. Wm married Miss
Wilcox of Charles City Co. left daughters, Courtenay
married Henry Daingerfield, her third cousin,
of Essex Co Va. Issue. living [crossed out, illegible] Louisa, Ellinor,
George, all living at Tappahannock Va.

4th sister Jane Hatley Norton: married her
1st cousin. Arthur Clayton. Issue Jasper,
Fannie, George, John. Jasper living near
Manchester, Chesterfield Co Va.

Frances Norton Baylor my Grandmother, had
three brothers; George, Daniel, and Hatley. The
1st. and 3d., died without issue, Daniel married;
left issue: One daughter who formerly lived in
Norfolk: name, not remembered.

George Daniel Baylors Mother: Frances Norton of
London. Her Mother: Courtenay Walker of Yorktown
Va. her Mother: Courtenay Tucker. Her Mother:
Frances Nelson Courtenay. Her Mother Frances Courtenay
daughter of Sir Reginald Courtenay, who it is
affirmed by tradition, came over from Normandy
to England. My father Geo D. Baylor told us
frequently, that our ancestors were Norman French
who went over and settled in England.

[torn, illegible] Baylor, 3d. daughter of Dr. George Daniel
Baylor, and Eliza Lewis Fox, was born in February 2nd.
1828: and named: Julia, after a great Aunt: Julia
Lewis : Mrs Throckmorton, who left no issue; and
Anne, after Great Grandmother, Anne Fox : Anne
Macon, who raised my Mother; Daughter of John
Fox of Gloucester County Va, and Eleanor Lewis of
same.
