Faint language of my flowing Heart!
Canst thou my thoughts reveal?
Thou to my Friend can'st ne'er impart
Those joyous throbs I feel.
Whilst here, in distant Realms confined,
My sluggish body waits,
My active fancy, more refin'd,
With distant hope dilates;
An arial pinions swiftly borne,
She views the coming tune,
When Friendship's Flame shall brighter burn
In her own native lime.
Delightful source of placid pleasure!
Those, of life, the richest treasure,
Sweet Friendship! solacer of woe,
To thee a thousand joys we owe.
'Tis thou who sooth'st the "harrow'd soul,"
And drie'st up tomorrow's tear,
Thou dost the papion's rage controul,
And all our evils share. --
To you my Friend whose kindred mind,
By friendship's purest test refin'd
Whose manly soul & lib'ral thought,
Her warmest influence oft has caught;
[Page 2]
Need I the pleasures try to show
Which from this spring so copiuous flow!
From thy ingenuous Heart I'll draw
Her purest rules, Her finest law;
Will see her lambent flame arise,
And catch her raptures from your Eyes.-
May Days propitious wait my Friend!
May Halcyon hours on him attend!
May Health her florid blessings lend
And Love his dimpled pleasures blend!
May no disaster him assail
But by contentment's chearful gail
May he through life be gently borne
Till Time [illegible] -- and I return.-
