Description

James Macleod, merchant of Yorktown, letter to Mann Page, Rosewell, Gloucester County, Virginia dated July 21, 1790. Macleod writes that he has sent rum, wine, limes, sugar and shoes by one of Page's enslaved workers. He also writes concerning the tobacco of Mr. Burwell's estate and that of Page's father.

Mann Page Esquire

I sent you per your Negroe 5 Gallons
of best Rum, a pint Lacking which your
Negroe put in his Bottle, 3 Gallons
Madeira Wine, which is the same kind
you had before, 150 Limes, 8 lb [illegible]
of brown Sugar, & 1 Loaf of Sugar, & a pair
of Shoes, being all you wrote to me for

There is only 447 lb of Tobacco belonging
to the Estate of Mr. Burwell picked with
the greatest care, 130 lb of your Fathers,
best. they will come far short of a Hogshead
when the 5 per Cent is taken off, I will
Transfer ^ its & Account with you for the same
The other Tobacco was priz'd up which I
[illegible] by paying the Inspectors 2 Dollars
for prizing, any thing that I can serve you
in I shall do with pleasure & am Sir, your very Humble Servant
