    Order issued by Colonel William W. Averell, commander of the 1st Cavalry Brigade, to Dr. Thomas H. Sherwood, assistant surgeon of the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry, dated August 21, 1862. Averell orders Sherwood to assume the administration of the Eastern Virginia Lunatic Asylum (now Eastern State Hospital) in Williamsburg, Virginia. Averell's order directs Sherwood to remain behind and continue at the Asylum even if the town should be retaken by Confederate forces.

    The second half of the volume is the diary of the Reverend Robert Rose.

    Edmund Bagge (d. 1734) was an Anglican minister serving St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, at the time of his death.

    Inscribed: For Sir Robert Menzies. Bart--page [1] at end.

    Alfred Moffat's inscription on the front pastedown reads: "c. 1765

    "Barbella died 1773. The Brit. Mus. Catalogue gives 1765 as date of
    issue of this book. It is probably correct.

    "This copy is signed by Sir A. Menzies to whom the work is dedicated. It is certainly a presentation copy to Sir Robert Menzies. Bart. of Loch Rammoch. Perthshire. (see back of last page)"

Mrs. Baylor writes approvingly of John's desire to attend Cambridge University. She writes of her desire to see him and apologizes that the foodstuffs she sent didn't reach him and will try sending them again. The letter was sent to John at Mr. John Norton's. Norton was a London merchant and uncle to John by way of his marriage to Mrs. Walker's sister, Courtenay.
