This indenture quadripartite made the tinth day of december in the year one thousand
seven hundred and seventy eight Between Samuel Grifin esquire of the first part Elizabeth Braxton
one of the daughters of Carter Braxton esquire of the second part John Tayloe Corbin esquire of the third
part, and the said Carter Braxton esquire of the fourth ^ part Witnesseth that the said Samuel Griffin esquire,
in consideration of a marriage by God's permission shortly intended to be had and solemnized between
the said Samuel Griffin and the said Elizabeth Braxton, and also in consideration of the sum of
two thousand five hundred pounds current money of Virginia to be paid by the said Carter Braxton his
heirs executors or administrators unto the said Samuel Griffin his heirs executors or administrators as
and for the said Elizabeth's marriage portion, and also for and in the further consideration of the sum
of five shillings by the said John Tayloe Corbin to the said Samuel Griffin in hand paid the reciept
whereof he doth hereby acknowlege, Hath, by and with the advice and consent of the said and the
desire of the said Elizabeth Braxton, John Tayloe Corbin and Carter Braxton, testified by their being
parties to and subscribing these presents, given granted bargained sold [illegible] enfeoffes assignes and set over
[illegible] the said J[oh]n Tayloe Corbin and his heirs and assigns all those lots of land, and the houses and other
improvements [ther]eon lying and being in the city of Williamsburg in the state of Virginia which the
said Samuel Griffin purchased of Mary Byrd widow and executrix of the late honorable William
Byrd esquire, and all his the said Samuel Griffin's silver plate of whatever kind; and also a bond of doctor
Corbin Griffin's payable to the said Samuel Griffin for the sum of five thousand pounds current money of
Virginia; and also continental loan office certificates to the amount and value of five thousand and ten pounds
of like money. And it is hereby declared agreed and concluded by the said Samuel Griffin that the said lots
and houses, plate, bond and certificates shall be and remain in the said John Tayloe Corbin his heirs
executors and administrators, upon and under [illegible] liable and subject to the several trusts uses intents
purposes provisoes conditions and agreements herein after expressed, that is to say, in trust for the said
Samuel Griffin his executors administrator and assigns until the said intended marriage shall be
solemized and from and after the solemnization of the said intended marriage [illegible] in trust that
the the said John T[a]yloe Corbin shall suffer, and permit the said Samuel Griffin and his assigns during
the [illegible] coninuance [of] the said marriage] to receive and take to his and their own proper use and behoof the interest
and other profit[s] which shall accrue or be made by or from the said lots and houses, plate bond and certifi
cates or any of them, and ^ in case of the death of the said Elizabeth Braxton without issue the said Samuel
Griffin being the survivor then to and for the use and behoof of him the said Samuel Griffin his heirs and
assigns forever; or in case of the death of the said Elizabeth Braxton, leaving issue of the said marriage a
son then as to five thousand pounds of the sums above mentioned to the use of such son and his heirs and
assigns, or leaving but one child and that a daughter then as to two thousand five hundred punts of the
above mentioned sums to the use of such daughter and her heirs and assigns forever. But in case of
the death of the said Samuel Griffin, the said Elizabeth [illegible] leaving issue a son, then as to five
thousand pounds to the use of such son his heirs and assigns or leaving a daughter the to the use of such
daughter and her heirs and assigns, and, in either of the said last mentioned cases, if the said Elizabeth should
survive the said Samuel then as to the said lots and houses and plate to the use of the said Elizabeth for
her life, and as to five thousand pounds to the use of the said Elizabeth and her heirs and assigns, and
case of the death of the said Samuel Griffn without issue, living the said Elizabeth, then the said
lots houses, plate bond and certificates to be and remain to the use and behoof of the said Elizabeth

her heirs ans assigns forever. And it is hereby agreed and declared by and between the parties to those
presents that if it shall hereafter be found to be more advantagious to dispose of the said loan office
certificates and lay the value of them out in lands and slaves or otherwise that then the said John
Tayloe Corbin his heirs executors and administrator shall sell and dispose of the said loan office certificates
with the consent and approbation of the said Samuel Griffin, and dispose of the money arising from
the sale thereof in such manner as shall be agreeable to the said Samuel Griffin so as whatsoever
shall be so purchased shall be settled to the same uses as are herein declared to be the intent of
this indenture. And lastly it is agreed and declared by and between the parties to these presents that this
present settlement is intended for and shall [be] taken as a full satisfaction for, and in lieu and bar of
all doner and thirds which the said Elizabeth might lawfully have and claim and of the real or
personal estate which the Samuel Griffin now has or hereafter may have. In witness whereof the
parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals, the day and year
first aboved writ[te]n.
