Description

The letter books of Robert Carter III of Nomini Hall (Westmoreland County, Virginia), Williamsburg and Baltimore, Maryland. The three letter books contain copies of Carter's correspondence from the years 1762-1769. Among the correspondence are letters to merchants in London, Glasgow, Leghorn, Madeira, New York and Philadelphia. These letters document the wide variety of goods Carter ordered for his family, plantations and the people he enslaved. The letters also document his financial matters, plantation management, and personal and family affairs. Additionally, the letter books contain correspondence concerning the estates of Lieutenant Governor Francis Fauquier and Carter's father-in-law, Benjamin Tasker of Maryland.

Among those to whom the letters were addressed are Sir Jeffery Amherst, Samuel Athawes, Cary & Co., Colonel Charles Carter, Landon Carter, Daniel Dulany, Capel and Osgood Hanbury, Pringle, Cheap & Company, Edward Ransdell, and John Ridout.
